Symptom

Electrolux washer cycle never ends

SU dS is the maker's code and the machine is handling the problem correctly — it rinses again, and again, until the foam has gone, adding about five minutes each time. This is the most common washer call we take that is not a repair at all. A front loader uses a fraction of the water a top loader does, so an ordinary dose of the wrong detergent oversuds every single time.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Read the bottle

HE or high-efficiency, printed on the front. Non-HE is not a dosing problem, it is the wrong product.

  2. 02

Halve the dose for a fortnight

If the problem goes, that was it.

  3. 03

    Run an empty quick wash

The maker's own instruction, and it clears what is already there.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “SU dS, and the machine is doing exactly the right thing”
  • “A non-HE detergent cannot work in this machine at any dose”
  • “Most households use roughly twice what these drums need”
A flexible dryer duct running from the back of a machine to a wall outlet in a laundry closet, the machine pulled forward.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

In more detail

About Electrolux washer cycle never ends

What to do in the next ten minutes

Check the bottle says HE or high-efficiency. Halve what you are pouring — the line inside the cap was drawn for a far thirstier machine. Let the extra rinses finish rather than canceling them, and run one empty quick wash afterwards to clear what is left in the drum.

Why it starts the week somebody switches brands

The drum still holds residue from the previous product, so the first several loads with a new detergent are foaming on the sum of both. That is why this symptom so often begins immediately after a change and then settles — or does not, if the new product is not HE. Running one empty hot cycle between products removes the variable entirely, and almost nobody does it.

Before you book

Questions about Electrolux washer cycle never ends

Can I cancel the extra rinses?

You can, and the foam then stays in the drum for the next load. Letting them finish is five minutes now against the same problem tomorrow.

I have always used this detergent.

Then look at the dose and at whether the water has changed — a building that switched supply or a new softener will change how much foam the same dose makes.
