Symptom

Electrolux water under the refrigerator

Three ordinary sources, and where the water shows tells you which. Under the crisper drawers is the defrost drain. Behind or beneath the cabinet is the supply line to the dispenser and ice maker. Down the front of a door is condensation from a seal. In a fitted kitchen the order of urgency is different from a rental, because the water reaches joinery and flooring long before anybody sees a puddle on tile.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Look under the crisper drawers first

It takes thirty seconds and it settles the cheapest of the three.

  2. 02

Check behind the cabinet with a torch

Water at the back is the supply line, and that is the one to act on quickly.

  3. 03

Feel the door seals for damp

A gasket that is wet on the outside is condensing, and that is a seal rather than a leak.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Where the water appears identifies the source before anybody arrives”
  • “In a fitted kitchen it finds the cabinetry before it finds the floor”
  • “A slow leak behind a built-in cabinet is the expensive version”
A run of pale fitted cabinetry along one wall of a bright kitchen with a wall oven, a cooktop and a flush refrigerator all in the same line, seen from an angle.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

About Electrolux water under the refrigerator

What to do in the next ten minutes

Find where the water actually is rather than where it has run to. Pull the crisper drawers and look underneath them. If there is water there, it is the defrost drain and it is not urgent. If the water is behind or under the cabinet, close the supply valve and call us — on a built-in unit that one is worth not waiting on.

Why a slow leak costs more than a fast one here

On tile, in a rental, a fast leak is noticed and dealt with. In a fitted kitchen the cabinet sits in joinery on a floor that was laid around it, and a weep of a few drops a day goes into the substrate for months before anything shows. By the time there is a mark on the floor there is usually a repair to the kitchen as well as to the appliance. That is the reason we treat a reported leak behind a built-in cabinet as urgent and a puddle under the drawers as routine.

Questions about Electrolux water under the refrigerator

Can I just keep mopping it?

For a defrost drain, yes, for a while — it is not damaging anything but the floor. For anything at the back of the cabinet, no.

Is the drain something I can clear myself?

Sometimes, from inside the freezer, with warm water. It comes back unless the blockage at the bottom of the tube is actually removed, which is what makes the repair last.
