Symptom

Electrolux frost building up inside

A no-frost cabinet that is building frost is telling you one of two things: moist air is getting in, or the defrost cycle is not completing. On a 33-inch column the geometry makes this worse than on a small box — the evaporator is tall, ice builds from the bottom upward, and by the time anything is visible on the top shelf there is a great deal of it out of sight behind the rear panel.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The door is not sealing

On a column carrying a trim panel the hinge has been taking that weight for years, and a door slightly out of square lets humid air in continuously.

    Door seal replacement from $155
  • The defrost circuit is not completing

Heater, cut-out or control. Ice grows on the evaporator until air stops passing it, and the cabinet then fails for a reason that looks unrelated.

    Defrost system repair from $165
  • The drain has frozen and backed up

Water that cannot leave refreezes where it stands, and on a column that is at the bottom of the evaporator where nobody sees it.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Look at where the frost sits

Even through the box, or concentrated at the vents. Two different repairs.

  2. 02

Close the door and watch the seal

A gap you can see at one corner is the whole explanation.

  3. 03

Note how quickly it comes back after clearing

Days means a door. Weeks means defrost.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Two causes only: air getting in, or defrost not completing”
  • “On a tall column the ice builds from below and shows late”
  • “A heavy door out of square is the commonest way air gets in”
A kitchen at the end of the day with one appliance door standing open and its interior light on, the rest of the room in soft daylight.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Electrolux frost building up inside

What to do in the next ten minutes

Look at where the frost is. Even frost through the compartment points at air getting in; a solid build around the rear vents points at the defrost circuit. Check the door closes squarely and that nothing on a shelf is holding it fractionally open. Do not chip at ice around the vents.

Why clearing the ice is not a repair

People defrost the cabinet manually, it works for a few weeks, and it comes back. That is not a failure of the defrosting — it is confirmation of the diagnosis. Whatever put the ice there is still doing it, and on a column the second build is usually worse because the drain is now involved too. The useful thing to record is how long it took to return, because that number separates a door problem from a defrost problem better than anything anyone can see.

Questions about Electrolux frost building up inside

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes, until the airflow is affected. Once frost reaches the vents the cabinet will start losing temperature and then it is the more urgent problem.

Should I unplug it and defrost it fully?

It will help temporarily and it will not fix it. If you do, photograph the coil before the ice goes — where it was sitting is the single most useful piece of evidence in this repair.
