# Electrolux warm fridge, cold freezer

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Hold the door switch in — the fan stops when the door opens, so it is silent exactly when you are looking at it — and listen. Then look at the rear wall inside the fresh-food section for frost or for a shelf against the vent. Note whether the freezer is holding properly, because that is the half of the observation that matters.

### Why this one is worth telling us on the phone

It narrows the visit more than any other thing an owner can say. A warm fridge with a cold freezer sends a technician out with a fan motor, a damper and a defrost kit on the van; both compartments drifting together sends them out with gauges. Those are different appointments, and getting it right the first time is the difference between one visit and two on a cabinet that has to be drawn out of its opening either way.

The evaporator fan has slowed or stopped

Cold is made in the freezer and carried across. Stop the carrying and this is exactly what you get, with the freezer unaffected.

Frost has closed the duct

When the defrost cycle stops finishing, ice fills the evaporator and the first casualty is whatever air was being sent across.

The damper is stuck

A mechanical flap controls how much cold crosses over. Stuck shut, the fresh-food side starves while everything else is normal.

Hold the door switch and listen

No fan means the fan. It is a ten-second test and it is conclusive.

Look for frost on the rear wall

Visible frost inside the fresh-food compartment points at defrost rather than at the fan.

Check the freezer is genuinely holding

Should the freezer be sliding as well, this becomes a larger and dearer problem, and we would rather hear it beforehand.

One half is perfect and the other is not

What it usually means

One warm side almost always means air, not refrigerant

The fan, a damper, or a duct packed with frost

The cheap half of refrigeration failure, and it is worth confirming

### Can I use it while I wait?

The freezer half is unaffected, so carry on using it. Keep perishables out of the fresh-food compartment until it is holding below 40 °F again.

### Will running it colder help?

No, and it usually makes it worse. Turning the fresh-food side down makes the machine run longer, which builds more frost on a coil that is already struggling to breathe.
