# Electrolux water under the refrigerator

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Find where the water actually is rather than where it has run to. Pull the crisper drawers and look underneath them. If there is water there, it is the defrost drain and it is not urgent. If the water is behind or under the cabinet, close the supply valve and call us — on a built-in unit that one is worth not waiting on.

### Why a slow leak costs more than a fast one here

On tile, in a rental, a fast leak is noticed and dealt with. In a fitted kitchen the cabinet sits in joinery on a floor that was laid around it, and a weep of a few drops a day goes into the substrate for months before anything shows. By the time there is a mark on the floor there is usually a repair to the kitchen as well as to the appliance. That is the reason we treat a reported leak behind a built-in cabinet as urgent and a puddle under the drawers as routine.

The defrost drain has blocked

Meltwater with nowhere to go runs forward under the drawers instead of down to the pan. The commonest refrigeration complaint we take in this region.

The water line or a fitting is weeping

A compression joint that leaks under pressure is dry when you look at it, which is why these are described as intermittent.

A seal is letting warm air in

Humid air on a cold surface condenses, and in this climate a failed gasket produces real quantities of water rather than a trace.

Look under the crisper drawers first

It takes thirty seconds and it settles the cheapest of the three.

Check behind the cabinet with a torch

Water at the back is the supply line, and that is the one to act on quickly.

Feel the door seals for damp

A gasket that is wet on the outside is condensing, and that is a seal rather than a leak.

A puddle, a wet floor, or water under the drawers

What it usually means

Where the water appears identifies the source before anybody arrives

In a fitted kitchen it finds the cabinetry before it finds the floor

A slow leak behind a built-in cabinet is the expensive version

### Can I just keep mopping it?

For a defrost drain, yes, for a while — it is not damaging anything but the floor. For anything at the back of the cabinet, no.

### Is the drain something I can clear myself?

Sometimes, from inside the freezer, with warm water. It comes back unless the blockage at the bottom of the tube is actually removed, which is what makes the repair last.
