# Electrolux dryer stops before the load is dry

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Find the two metal strips inside the drum opening and wipe them with a little rubbing alcohol. Run an automatic cycle and see whether it stops on its own at the right point. Use timed cycles in the meantime — the machine still works.

### What the automatic cycles actually measure

Not time, and not temperature — conductivity. Damp fabric conducts; dry fabric does not. Two metal strips in the drum opening measure the resistance across whatever touches them, and the control stops the cycle when the reading says dry. Anything that insulates those strips — softener, a build-up of detergent residue, a coating from dryer sheets — makes the machine believe the load is drier than it is. It is a maintenance item that reads as an electronic failure.

Softener film on the sensor strips

It insulates them, the reading goes high, and the machine concludes the load is dry when it is not.

The load is too small to touch the sensor

A single item tumbling can miss the strips entirely. Not a failure, and it explains intermittent complaints.

The sensor or its harness has failed

The genuine repair, and telling us that timed cycles still work narrows the part before we arrive.

Clean the strips

Rubbing alcohol on a cloth. This is the whole repair often enough to always try first.

Test with a normal-sized load

A very small load genuinely does confuse an automatic cycle.

Confirm timed cycles are unaffected

If timed cycles are also wrong, this is not the sensor and the diagnosis moves to heat and airflow.

Automatic cycles end early; timed cycles work

What it usually means

Automatic cycles wrong while timed cycles are right — that is the sensor

E 4, and the maker's own note says the machine keeps working

Softener film across the strips is the usual cause and it is free

### Should I stop using dryer sheets?

You do not have to, but they are the cause of this and they will bring it back. Wiping the strips every few months is the easier trade.

### It over-dries rather than under-dries.

Same sensor, opposite reading, usually a harness or connection problem rather than a film. Worth booking, because over-drying is hard on fabric and on the machine.
