### Two answers, and they are far apart on price

A belt that has stretched or jumped off gives an audible motor and a motionless drum. A motor or control problem gives silence. Those are the two ends of this job and they are a long way apart, which is why the quote has to be able to carry both and why one observation from the owner settles most of it. The third possibility — a drum that is heavy or gritty turned by hand — is bearings, and that is a different and larger conversation.

Run it empty and listen

Audible motor, motionless drum: the belt. Nothing audible at all: the motor, whatever commands it, or the supply reaching it.

Turn the drum by hand

Free and light is a drive problem. Heavy or gritty is bearings, and that is a different conversation about whether to repair at all.

Check the control is asking for the motor

A motor that never receives a command tests as a failed motor to anybody who does not check.

### Does the series matter?

Yes. A 700 Series machine and the 24-inch compact do not share a drive and their parts do not interchange. The compact is its own design rather than a small version of the full-size.

### It makes noise that changes with speed.

That is mechanical rather than electronic, and it points at the drum rather than the motor. Worth mentioning when you book, because it changes what comes on the van.
