# Electrolux ice maker water line and valve

### The mold gets a fixed number of seconds

That single fact explains most bad ice. The valve opens for a set time and the mold harvests on schedule regardless of how much arrived, so a restriction anywhere upstream gives a short fill and a thin shell — which is what a hollow cube is. It also makes this one of the few appliance problems with a genuine quantitative test: how much water reaches a jug in ten seconds tells you nearly everything before anything is opened.

What this involves

Line, shutoff, filter and fill valve are one chain

Half the chain is behind joinery on a built-in cabinet

A restriction anywhere in it produces identical symptoms

Measure the fill rather than watch it

A timed fill into a measuring jug tells you in one cycle what an afternoon of guessing will not.

Work back from the appliance to the wall

Valve, filter, line, shutoff. Starting at the wall means dismantling the easy end first for no reason.

Replace a saddle valve rather than reopening it

The self-piercing valves used on older installations silt up and cannot be cleaned. Reopening one buys a few months.

### Where does the restriction usually turn out to be?

The filter first, by a wide margin. Then a self-piercing saddle valve that has silted up, and then a line squeezed behind a cabinet that was pushed back into its opening.

### Can the building's water pressure cause this?

In a tower at peak hours, yes. If the kitchen tap is weak at the same times, that is worth establishing before the appliance is blamed.
