### The air path belongs to the kitchen, not the appliance

On a column behind a trim kit or a cabinet scribed into an opening, the route warm air takes out was decided by a joiner years ago and nobody has looked at it since. In coastal air it closes up quietly over about four years, and the cabinet keeps working the entire time it is happening — running longer every month, holding temperature right up until the day it does not. This is the lowest figure on this site that reliably changes how long an appliance lasts.

Reach the coil properly

On a column that means the grille and often the trim. A coil half-cleaned from the front is a coil that will be back in six months.

Clean the fan and its housing as well

The condenser fan collects the same material and moves less air as it does. Cleaning the coil and ignoring the fan solves half the problem.

Check the air path through the joinery

Where a cabinet was built in, the route it breathes through is part of the kitchen rather than part of the appliance, and nobody has looked at it since the kitchen was fitted.

Measure before and after

Run time and temperatures. A cleaning visit without numbers is a cleaning visit nobody can judge.

### How do I know if mine needs it?

If you cannot remember it being done and the cabinet is more than three years old in this region, it does. There is no warning symptom before the one that costs money.

### Can I do it myself?

On a freestanding machine with a grille at the base, often yes. On a column behind a trim kit the coil is not reachable without bringing the unit forward, and that is the part worth having somebody else do.
