# Dryer signal Mute

### What the appliance is actually reporting

The end-of-cycle chime is switched off. The maker lists it among its codes, and we keep it there, because the complaint it answers is a real one: a dryer that no longer tells anybody it has finished leaves a load sitting and creasing, and the owner reasonably assumes something has failed. Nothing has. There is a mute setting, it is easy to hit while wiping a panel, and some models light an icon to say so. On a machine tucked into a closet at the other end of an apartment, the chime is most of the interface.

### Where this appears, and why not to clear it

On the appliance’s own display, as a short single code — a letter and a number, or two letters. Nothing alternates and nothing arrives in halves on this make, so what the panel shows is the whole of it. Photograph it before you cut the power. This maker’s own answer to most of these is thirty seconds at the breaker, and that is worth following once — but a display that has been cleared has taken the evidence with it, and there is no way to ask the machine for it again.

### What to do about it

- Look for a mute or speaker icon on the panel. If it is lit, that is the whole answer.
- Track the mute setting down in the book that came with the dryer. It usually shares a button with something else and wants a hold rather than a tap.
- Unmute and run a short cycle to confirm the chime is back.
- If there is no mute icon and no chime, and the panel is otherwise normal, the sounder itself has failed — which is cosmetic, and worth mentioning only if we are visiting anyway.

### Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is [diagnostic visit](/services/diagnostic-visit/), and that page carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes, reminders and settings rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call [(305) 912-9018](tel:+13059129018) and describe what the panel is doing before booking anything.

The unit has no sounds or alarm chimes. The unit may be in mute mode and user must unmute the unit. Some units will have an illuminated mute icon, indicating Mute has been activated.
