# A Cracked Induction Top: What It Costs and What Decides It

Electrolux cooktop glass replacement cost is one of the few figures on this site where the honest number is uncomfortable, and publishing a softer one would make the decision impossible.

## The crack does not decide whether it is repairable

It is not repairable either way. Ceramic glass cannot be filled, bonded or polished back — there is no version of this where the existing pane is saved.

What the crack decides is **which part number**, and that is what the estimate turns on. Glass on these units is specific to the model, and on some of them to the finish as well, so a 30-inch induction top and a 36-inch one are not interchangeable and neither are two 36-inch tops from different generations.

## The second question, which people do not expect

Whether the frame underneath moved.

An impact hard enough to crack the pane has usually done something else — bent a support, shifted a bracket, distorted the frame the glass sits in. New glass fitted into a frame that is no longer flat is new glass that cracks again, sometimes within weeks.

That check is part of the job and it is occasionally the reason a quote comes back higher than the part alone.

## Why it is published at its real level

Because the only decision worth making here is a comparison, and a comparison needs two honest numbers.

On a recent unit, replacing the glass is frequently the right call. On an older cooktop the figure lands close enough to the price of a new appliance that the arithmetic stops working — and if we had published a comfortable-looking number, you would not have been able to see that.

We quote the glass against what the unit is worth and tell you which way we would go. On a drop-in cooktop, incidentally, replacing the appliance also means matching the cut-out in the counter, which belongs in the sum.

## Do not use it in the meantime

This is the part of the page that matters most.

The glass is structural — it carries the pans and it separates the food from the electronics. A crack means the seal between those two is gone, and what is underneath is power electronics that were never intended to meet anything spilled.

A crack also travels, and it travels under heat, which is exactly when you would be standing over it.

Switch it off at the breaker rather than avoiding that zone. On an induction top there is no visible element to reassure you about which part is live.
