# The One Job Your Refrigerator Will Never Ask You For

Electrolux refrigerator condenser cleaning is the cheapest thing anybody does to a cold appliance in this region, and the one most reliably skipped — because nothing ever asks for it.

## The asymmetry that causes this

Your refrigerator counts the water filter. It lights an indicator, it emails an app, it puts a symbol on the panel. Change the filter and the reminder resets.

The condenser has none of that. There is no counter, no sensor, no indicator and no reminder, because the machine has no way to know. An owner who changes the water filter religiously will very often have a coil that has never been touched, and the appliance is the reason.

## What the coil does and what closes it

The condenser sheds the heat the cabinet removes from its own inside. It is a run of finned tubing with a fan pulling air across it, and its entire job is a temperature difference with the room.

In South Florida, within a few miles of salt air, what collects on it is a mixture nothing was designed around — dust, pet hair, cooking grease from the kitchen it lives in, and a fine salt-bearing grit that binds the rest into a mat. Four years is typical for that mat to become continuous.

The cabinet keeps working the entire time it forms. It runs a little longer each month, holds its temperature perfectly, and gives no sign at all until the day it stops holding.

## Built in makes it twice as important

On a freestanding refrigerator the coil is reached from the front through a grille at floor level. The design assumes somebody will.

On a counter-depth cabinet scribed into an opening, or a 33-inch column behind a flat or louvered trim kit, air reaches the coil through one defined route — usually a grille above or below that a joiner fitted and nobody has looked at since the kitchen went in.

That route collects as surely as the coil does, and it is not visible from the kitchen. It also cannot be cleaned from the front on most of these installations, which is why the job becomes ours rather than yours.

## What it actually protects

The compressor.

A condenser that cannot reject heat makes the compressor run continuously against a higher head pressure, at a higher temperature, for years. Compressors are robust and they tolerate that for a long time — and then they are the one failure on a refrigerator where the repair costs a large fraction of a new cabinet and comes with no promise about the rest of it.

On a built-in column that conversation is worse still, because the replacement is not just an appliance. It is an appliance that has to match an opening and a trim kit.

## When to do it

Annually here. If you have a pet, or the kitchen cooks hard, or the cabinet is within sight of water, annually and not optimistically.

And do the fan at the same time. It collects the same material, runs out of balance as it does, and behind a trim kit that vibration is what you hear in the next room.
