# Electrolux freezers

### A freezer that is really a piece of cabinetry

Nearly everything written about freezer repair on the internet is about a chest freezer in a garage. None of it applies here. This make’s freezer is a full-height column, 33 inches wide, built into a run and very often wearing a panel that matches the kitchen. The failures are different, the access is different, and the decision about whether to repair is different — you are not weighing the cost against a replacement box from a warehouse club, you are weighing it against taking a wall of joinery apart.

### The pair, and why we ask which one you have

Because the refrigerator column and the freezer column are the same cabinet with different insides, people describing a problem on the phone very often name the wrong one. The model numbers differ by a single letter. If you can read the plate — it is inside the door, on the upper left side wall — we will bring the right part the first time.

A freezer that is really a piece of cabinetry

Nearly everything written about freezer repair on the internet is about a chest freezer in a garage. None of it applies here. This make’s freezer is a full-height column, 33 inches wide, built into a run and very often wearing a panel that matches the kitchen. The failures are different, the access is different, and the decision about whether to repair is different — you are not weighing the cost against a replacement box from a warehouse club, you are weighing it against taking a wall of joinery apart.

The pair, and why we ask which one you have

Because the refrigerator column and the freezer column are the same cabinet with different insides, people describing a problem on the phone very often name the wrong one. The model numbers differ by a single letter. If you can read the plate — it is inside the door, on the upper left side wall — we will bring the right part the first time.

### Everything is frozen but there is frost building on the walls.

Frost inside a no-frost column means moist air is getting in, or the defrost cycle is not completing. On a column fitted into cabinetry the first of those is the one we look at, because the door is heavy, it is often carrying a trim panel, and a hinge that has taken that weight for years no longer pulls the seal square. That is a hinge and a gasket, not a sealed system, and it is worth knowing which before you are quoted.

### Can I put one of these in the garage?

This is not that appliance, and it is worth saying plainly. The line has no garage-rated upright and no chest freezer; a 19 cubic foot column is designed for conditioned space. In a South Florida garage it will run continuously, and the failures that follow are not warranty failures — they are the machine being asked to do something it was not built for.

### The freezer is fine but the matching refrigerator is not, or the reverse.

They are two separate appliances that look like one. Each column has its own sealed system, its own control and its own defrost, so one failing tells you nothing about the other. What they do share is the installation, so when both go strange at once we look at what is common to them — the circuit, the air path through the trim, the room.

### How long should one of these last?

Longer than a mass-market cabinet, because it is a simpler machine — no dispenser, no ice in the door, one compartment at one temperature. Most of what we replace in them is mechanical and serviceable. We will tell you when a repair stops being worth it rather than quoting you for one that is not.
