### Induction is not a radiant top with a different name

Nearly all general advice about a “glass cooktop” is written for radiant elements under ceramic. This make does not build one. Induction puts a coil under the glass and heats the pan directly, so it has power electronics, cooling fans and vents that a radiant top does not have — so what goes wrong on it is thermal and about airflow rather than a burnt-out element. A drawer packed tight beneath the unit is a genuine cause of shutdowns, and it is not something anybody expects.

### A rangetop is not a cooktop

One of the five is a 36-inch gas rangetop: a cooking surface with a raised back panel and its own controls, made to sit in a counter run with the oven built in elsewhere. It is deeper, it is plumbed and vented differently, and its parts are its own. When somebody books a “cooktop” repair and we find a rangetop, the visit usually has to be repeated with the right part — so we ask.

Nearly all general advice about a “glass cooktop” is written for radiant elements under ceramic. This make does not build one. A rangetop is not a cooktop

### Induction: the pan heats for a moment and then it stops.

That is usually the cooktop protecting itself rather than failing. Induction zones shut down on their own temperature, and the two ordinary reasons are a blocked vent underneath the unit — a drawer packed tight against it is enough — or a pan that is not flat enough to couple properly. Both are worth ruling out before anybody is called, and neither costs anything.

### Gas: one burner clicks and clicks but will not light.

The igniter is working, so the gas or the port is the problem. On a sealed burner it is nearly always a blocked port or a burner cap seated slightly off after a clean. Lift the cap, check it is square, and clear the ports. If it clicks and lights on the other burners but not that one, you have already done most of the diagnosis.

### Everything is locked out and it shows F40 or F41.

That is the cooktop locking its own surface elements — not the child lock, which shows a dash. On a unit dropped into a counter over an oven, this is frequently the first sign that heat is reaching the control cavity from underneath, and where the appliance sits becomes part of the diagnosis. A power cycle is what the maker publishes.

### Is a cracked induction top repairable?

The glass is a part and it is replaceable, but it is one of the more expensive single parts on the appliance, so it is worth an honest conversation rather than an automatic yes. We quote the glass against the cost of the unit and tell you which way we would go. A cracked top should not be used in the meantime.
